1952, Miami, Florida.  A boomtown in a segregated state.  Black star of stage and screen Etta Childs is found murdered on her kitchen floor.  After local police set the unsolved case aside, private detective Benjamin Sheen is hired to investigate.  
Discoveries of Etta's life out of the public eye takes Sheen from the black cultural center of Miami's Overtown to the state's political backrooms.  He crosses paths with aging musicians, gamblers, a prize fighter, corrupt cops and forges a surprising relationship with Etta's grieving family.
As Sheen approaches the truth, he and those around him become targets.  Now catching Etta's killer isn't his only concern.  Now he must survive the danger lurking in the city streets.
